The Name of the Game

Our Mission
The mission of UAlbany Lacrosse and the Grayed Danes Lacrosse Collective is to honor and advance the tradition, excellence, and community of UAlbany Lacrosse by supporting current athletes, uniting alumni, and promoting the growth of the sport through mentorship, pride, and Purple and Gold camaraderie.
Our Vision
To build a lasting legacy that connects generations of UAlbany Lacrosse players and fans, inspires excellence on and off the field, and positions the program as a national leader in collegiate lacrosse, alumni engagement, and community impact.

The UAlbany Lacrosse program began as a club in 1968, elevated to varsity status in 1970. Competing initially at the Division III level through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the team transitioned to Division II in 1996 before moving up to Division I in 2000. Under the leadership of Head Coach Scott Marr, hired in 2001, the Great Danes joined the America East Conference in 2002 and have since become a powerhouse.

Coach Marr’s tenure boasts nine America East Tournament titles, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, and 199 wins. His teams have produced 35 All-Americans, six Tewaaraton finalists, two Tewaaraton winners (2014, 2015), and numerous national award recipients including outstanding players and goalkeepers. Marr himself has been honored as America East Coach of the Year six times.

UAlbany’s lacrosse tradition extends beyond the field, with a vibrant alumni network and a passionate fan base whose “AAAAAAALBANY” chant resonates at playoff and NCAA games. The program has been a catalyst for local lacrosse growth, spawning youth programs, a professional NLL franchise in Albany, and hosting PLL events. The annual Lake Placid tournament features multiple UAlbany alumni teams proudly carrying the “Purple Pride” legacy.

The recent formation of the Grayed Danes Lacrosse Collective continues this tradition of excellence, camaraderie, and community support — a true testament to the spirit and history of UAlbany Lacrosse.
